CHAPTER 15

“You’re sure it was a Gloabon drone?” Brent asked. He turned around, peering along the street. A handful of huge cars purred past, their occupants invisible behind heavily tinted glass, but apart from Vince, Maisie, and Rawlgeeb, there was no one else on the sidewalk.
“I’m certain,” Rawlgeeb stated. “The fuel cells give off a distinct aroma. I’d know them anywhere.”
“That’s some sense of smell you have there,” Vince said. “Plenty of people would be very keen to take advantage of it.”
“And I must say that I was impressed with your counter-surveillance skills,” Rawlgeeb replied. “Very effective.”
Vince shrugged. “I’ve figured out a few things. I modified my handset a while back, and once you told me the frequencies to use, it was just a matter of–”
“Yeah, yeah,” Brent interrupted. “Listen, now we’ve shaken our spy in the sky, we need someone to stroll on up to the mayor’s office and say hi.”
They all stared at him, but Maisie recovered first. “Aren’t you coming with us?”
“No, I can’t.” Brent tugged at his shirt collar. “On the way over here, I recalled a little difference of opinion I had with the mayor.”
“You had an argument, so what?” Vince asked. “He’s not going to hold that against you.”
Brent grimaced. “Yes. Yes, he is. In fact, I can’t be anywhere within fifty feet of his office.”
“Oh, I see,” Maisie put in. “He put a restraining order on you.”
Brent tilted his head from side to side. “It was more of an unwritten understanding. The mayor made an emphatic suggestion that I should keep my distance, and I was happy to agree with him as soon as I recovered the power of speech, which, I’m pleased to say, was right after he let go of my throat.”
Maisie let out a low whistle. “I’d never have guessed he was like that. On TV, he always seems so nice.”
“What can I tell you? Never trust a politician, or, it turns out, a politician’s spouse.” Brent looked around the group. “Maisie, you’re the obvious choice. I think you should go talk to him.”
Maisie lifted her left eyebrow. “Why is that? Because I’m pretty? Is that the only way a woman can have power and influence in your book?”
“Not at all,” Brent protested. “I just figured that with your work at the UN, you’d be highly skilled in the art of talking to powerful people, that’s all.”
“Oh.” Maisie’s cheeks colored slightly. “I see. Yes, well, I suppose you’re right.”
“Plus, it doesn’t hurt that you’re easy on the eye,” Brent added. “No offense intended, but the mayor is a man with a finely honed appreciation for the female form if you know what I mean.”
“I should’ve known!” Maisie snapped. “I won’t be the worm on your hook, Brent, so you can forget it. I would’ve gone in there, but not now. Go see him yourself. You’re the one he wants in his pocket, so I guess that makes you his bitch. How do you like that?”
Brent rocked back on his heels. “Please refrain from using gender-based derogatory remarks.
